Fun, Free and Family Friendly
Are you planning a fun day out with your kids in London but you are on a tight budget? Some of London's big attractions do come with a bit of a hefty admission fee. Lucky, London Mums has come up with some of our favourite activities and places that are family friendly and sure to keep everyone entertained.
1. Golders Hill Park Zoo
Opening Times: 7.30am - dusk (4.30pm during Winter)
Location: Hampstead Heath
Nearest Tube Station: Golders Green
We love the zoo at
Golders Hill Park , as it's a great place to visit rare and exotics birds and animals for free!
2. Pelican Feeding, St James's Park
Opening Times: 2.30pm - 3pm daily
Location: Duck Island Cottage, St James's Park
Nearest Tube Station: St James's Park
The resident pelicans at St James's park are a definite must see, especially during the daily
feeding time at 2.30pm. The size and character of these magnificent birds will delight all visitors, young and old!
3. Science Museum
Opening Times: 10am - 6pm
Location: South Kensington
Nearest Tube Station: South Kensington
The Science museum , especially aimed for kids, makes science exciting and is one of the most visited museums in London. Older kids will love the Launchpad where they'll find over 50 different hands on experiments, while younger children have their own exhibits to visit too, meaning there's something for everyone.

4. Diana Princess Of Wales Memorial Playground
Opening Times: Opens 10am
Location: Kensington Gardens
Nearest Tube Station: Queensway
The amazing
Memorial Playground , will excite any child. Children of all ages will have a wonderful time exploring the pirate ship playground, digging in the sand, exploring the sensory trail and playing with the musical instruments and wooden animals. On hot days, the splashable mermaid fountains are a perfect way to cool off.
5. Crystal Palace Dinosaurs
Opening Times: 7.30am - Various seasonal closing times
Location: Crystal Palace
Nearest Tube: Closest overground station is Crystal Palace Station
For a prehistoric
roarsome day out, head to the fantastic
Crystal Palace Dinosaurs , located in Crystal Palace Park. The dinosaur statues are world famous heritage assets and children will love exploring the different dinosaurs and having their photo taken next to one!
Elsewhere in the park, you'll find a cafe, a playground, a maze and a children's farm.
6. The National Gallery
Opening Times: 10am - 6pm (9pm on Fridays)
Location: Trafalgar Square
Nearest Tube Station: Charing Cross
Though the idea of taking children to an art gallery may not sound the best, there's plenty of family friendly activities happening at
The National Gallery . On the weekends, there's workshops for children aged 5-12 and storytelling for the under 5s. During school holidays, you'll also find other activities and special events happening for children.
7. Changing Of The Guard
Opening Times: 11am
Location: Buckingham Palace
Nearest Tube Station: Victoria
Taking place in the Buckingham Palace Forecourt is the
Changing of the Guard . A must see for any visitor to London and also a great family-friendly activity, children will love watching the soldiers perform the prestigious and traditional ceremony. It takes place daily from May to July and alternate days through the rest of the year.
The same ceremony also happens at Horse Guards Parade daily at 11am and 10am on Sundays.
