Short films are like the little appetizers before the main course of cinema, where legends like Martin Scorsese, Lynne Ramsay, and Paul Thomas Anderson took their initial creative bites. For over twenty years, the has been the go-to spot for discovering fresh talent and those delightful, bite-sized films that pack a punch. This year, they're back for round 22, and it's a full buffet of 204 new short films spread across more than 60 programmes. Expect some tasty workshops, talks, and walking tours too, because why not get a little exercise while you feast on film? Various fabulous venues around the city, including the BFI Southbank and the Rio Cinema, are rolling out the red carpet.
As for the film line-up, it'll be difficult to choose where to start. There's the much-anticipated opening night 'Funny Shit' programme at Curzon Soho, serving up everything from surreal giggles to good old slapstick. Then, on January 20, you can catch the 'Lo-Budget Mayhem' and its tales of thrifty filmmaking at the Rio, followed by the delightfully bonkers 'WTF!' programme on January 25 for those who enjoy the truly unconventional. And don't miss the Animation Variety Show on January 21 at Rich Mix—you'll see everything from claymation to stop-motion embroidery, which sounds like arts and crafts gone rogue. Oh, and in a treat for the adventurous, there's a 22-seater Mobile Cinema Bus from the 1960s rolling around Walthamstow, Hounslow, and Crystal Palace offering free screenings. Yes, it's as cool as it sounds.
