Join the Friends of Lesnes Abbey and Woods on a walk around the ruins of a large Augustinian abbey in South East London where you will find out what the canons who lived here did as we visit and describe each part of the building. Meet on the paving by Chestnut's Cafe five minutes before the start of the tour This is just a 10 minute walk from Abbey Wood station.
We will cover:
The founder, his relationship with Thomas Becket and why this abbey was important to him
The various parts of the abbey and what happened in them
What attracted pilgrims to Lesnes Abbey on their way to Canterbury
Why there is a heart still buried in one of the chapels
Why the abbey struggled to make ends meet
Why it was one of the first abbeys close, and not by Henry VIII.
How the ruins survived and were uncovered at the start of the 20th century
Our friendly guides will be happy to field any questions.
This tour is suitable for school age children and above and relates the abbey to the national curriculum KS3 on the development of the Church, state and society in medieval Britain. We have various props and plenty of pictures to bring our tour to life as we take you around.
